Following is a list of the most basic commands you might want to know before using IRC. Many chat clients have graphical features that do the same, however.
| Command | Example | Info |
|---|---|---|
| /join <channel> | /join #dcml | Join a channel (chat room). You can connect to multible channels at a time. All channels have a # before their name. |
| /part <channel> [message] | /part #dcml See you later! | Leave a channel. The message is optional - if it is there, it will be shown to the other people in the channel when you leave. In many IRC clients you can just close the channel window instead of writing this command. |
| /quit [message] | /quit Quack quack for today! | Leave all channels and disconnect from the server. The message is optional, but if it is there it will be shown to the other people in the channel when you leave. In many IRC clients you can just close the main program window instead of writing this command. |
| Command | Example | Info |
|---|---|---|
| /whois <nickname> | /whois sko | Get some information about another person by supplying his/her nick name. |
| /me <message> | /me is reading comics | Express an action or a feeling, etc. If your nick name is "DDfan", the example will write in the channel "DDfan is reading comics". |
| /query <nickname> [message] | /query sko Hi Soeren! | Start a private chat with another person. |
Furthermore, you can write in colours by pressing Ctrl-K and then a number according to the colour you want. This might differ from client to client, so if this is not the way to do it, refer to your IRC client documentation. Please use colours with care, or a chat session can easily become very confusing.
Many newer clients have the possibility to write in bold and underlined. Use Ctrl-B to turn bold on or off and Ctrl-U to toggle underlined.
